WHAT IS AN INTERNATIONAL DRIVER’S LICENSE?
It’s confusing! We know. An International Driver’s License is very simply an unofficial translation of your domestic driver’s license into many languages. It’s a booklet, not an ID card. Most importantly, the International Driver’s License booklet has your name, your driving endorsements, and translations of your endorsements into 12 different languages. This translation booklet enables you to rent and drive vehicles all over the world.

WHY DO I NEED AN INTERNATIONAL DRIVER’S LICENSE?
If you are traveling to a foreign country and plan to rent or drive vehicles, you will most likely need an International Driver’s License. Often times, rental agencies require an International Driver’s License. If you do not have one, you will be unable to rent.
BUT I THOUGHT I COULD ONLY GET AN INTERNATIONAL DRIVER’S LICENSE IN MY HOME COUNTRY?
We specialize in International Driver’s Licenses for people who are already abroad. Many people leave their home country without getting the necessary documents to rent vehicles on their vacation. Many of these people are denied by rental agencies or fined exorbitant amounts of money by local authorities for not having an International Driver’s License.
We provide an unofficial translation of your domestic driver’s license so that you can overcome these barriers on your vacation and enjoy the freedom to rent vehicles abroad. We don’t think you should miss out on renting and riding vehicles simply because you didn’t know or have the time to get an International Driver’s License before you left. We also want you to have the confidence and the paperwork necessary to deal with local police if and when you are pulled over in a foreign country.
I KNOW YOUR WEBSITE SAYS 8 HOUR PROCESSING BUT HOW SOON WILL I RECEIVE MY ELECTRONIC VERSION AFTER SUBMITTING MY APPLICATION?
You will receive digital versions of your International Driver’s License in less than 8 hours of submitting you application. Most of the time, we process orders within 1-3 hours.
WHAT IS THE FASTEST WAY TO GET MY INTERNATIONAL DRIVER’S LICENSE?
The fastest way to get an ITA International Driver’s License is to choose the Electronic Only Version. If you choose Electronic Only, you will receive a PDF printable IDL within 8 hours along with detailed printing instructions. You can take these instructions to a local print shop and have your booklet printed in a few minutes.
WHAT IS INCLUDED IN THE ELECTRONIC-ONLY OPTION?
- Printable Version of your IDL Booklet
- Detailed Printing Instructions
- Scanned Version of your IDL Booklet
You will receive two PDFs of your International Driver’s License and detailed printing instructions. The first PDF is a printable version of your IDL that you can take to any print shop to have a physical copy printed. The second PDF is a scanned version of the IDL booklet. Sometimes people just need copies of the scanned booklet to email rental agencies and reserve vehicles in foreign countries. To make it easy to reach out to rental agencies, we include the scanned booklet.
DO ESTIMATED SHIPPING TIMES INCLUDE WEEKENDS AND HOLIDAYS?
No. The estimated number of shipping days for our shipping options do not include weekends or holidays. We estimate business days only and cannot ship on Sundays.
CAN YOU GUARANTEE THAT MY ORDER WILL ARRIVE IN CERTAIN NUMBER OF DAYS?
No we cannot guarantee that an order will arrive in an exact number of days. We determine the number of days an order will take to arrive at your address based on the estimates of the post office. If you are getting an order shipped internationally, your document will have to go through customs in the country you are having your document delivered to. Usually customs just takes a day but sometimes it can take more depending on the country and how busy the international shipping office is. Please allow time for this or choose a faster shipping option.
IF I GET MY INTERNATIONAL DRIVER’S LICENSE SHIPPED, WILL I RECEIVE A TRACKING NUMBER?
We provide tracking numbers for all shipping except US standard shipping ($5 option). All other shipping orders (US and International) will come with a tracking number. Once we process your application, we will send you a scanned version of your IDL and request for you to confirm your shipping address. Once your International Driver’s License has been shipped, we will email you a confirmation with your tracking number.
IS AN INTERNATIONAL DRIVER’S LICENSE A VALID FORM OF ID AND DOES IT REPLACE MY DOMESTIC DRIVER’S LICENSE?
No. An International Driver’s License is not a standalone document. Remember, an International Driver’s License is a translation of your Domestic Driver’s License. Your Domestic Driver’s License must be present for both to be valid.
CAN I USE MY INTERNATIONAL DRIVER’S LICENSE TO APPLY FOR A LOCAL LICENSE IN THE COUNTRY I AM TRAVELING TO?
Yes, the IDL can be used to apply for a local license in the countries you are traveling. Often times, an International Driver’s License is required. You can confirm exact requirements for the country you are visiting by referencing their local embassy, consulate, or department of transportation of vehicles.
WHAT ARE THE RISKS OF NOT HAVING AN INTERNATIONAL DRIVER’S LICENSE?
The severity of not having an International Driver’s License differs from country to country. The main risks are not being able to rent vehicles and being fined by local police when you are pulled over in foreign country.
We highly recommended clarifying with the local embassy resource guide (often found online), before visiting a country where you plan to drive. Regardless of the legal mandates for that country, you are always better off with an IDL then without one.
WHERE CAN I USE MY INTERNATIONAL DRIVER’S LICENSE?
ITA International Driver’s License is an internationally accepted translation of your domestic driver’s license that can be use in more than 150 countries in the world.
IS AN INTERNATIONAL DRIVER’S LICENSE THE SAME AS AN INTERNATIONAL DRIVING PERMIT?
Yes. They are the same. Simply put, they are both translations of your Domestic Driver’s License which is what you will need to rent vehicles abroad.
CAN I RENT A CAR WITH THE ITA INTERNATIONAL DRIVER’S LICENSE?
You can rent a car using the ITA IDL in most countries with most rental agencies but always check with companies prior to travel to ask about rules and regulations.
ARE YOU A GOVERNMENT AGENCY?
We are not a government agency and we do not issue government documents. We offer unofficial translations of your domestic driver’s license to help you communicate with local officials and rental agencies while you’re aboard.
WILL THIS WORK WITH MY TRAVEL INSURANCE?
We are not experts in Travel Insurance and are not authorized to speak on your insurance company’s behalf. For all questions about travel insurance, we highly encourage you to reach out to your insurance company.
